Nov 4, 2022 District 4 Class AAAA Semifinals No. 3 Selinsgrove at No. 2 Milton This semifinal looks like the most intriguing playoff contest this weekend.
These title contenders are a combined 17-3 and have won 11 straight total games.
Milton is trying to reach its first district championship since 2012 and Selinsgrove is hoping to return to the final for the 10th time in 11 years.
Each has a swarming defense and surging offenses, making them look mighty similar.
Milton (9-1) has won six straight games and is undefeated at home, with the starting defense holding four opponents scoreless there.
Milton’s line has set the tone and the defense also has been opportunistic, forcing 21 turnovers.
That unit also is allowing 165.1 yards per game, good for third in the area.
Safety Peyton Rearick is tied for the area interception lead (5) and has returned two for touchdowns.
Fellow defensive back Xzavier Minium also has two defensive touchdowns and is one of the district’s most versatile weapons, scoring four different ways and totaling 1,127 yards.
Quarterback Cale Bastian is a dual threat and both Rearick and Dylan Rieff have had some big receiving games.
Mason Rowe and Monty Fisher also have run well, with Fisher returning two punts for touchdowns.
Selinsgrove (8-2) was ravaged by injuries throughout the season’s first half but is healthy again as it surged throughout the second half, winning five consecutive games.
Despite missing 2 1/2 games, quarterback Mark Pastore has topped 1,000 yards for a second straight year and Gavin Bastian and Nick Rice each have had big games throughout the year.
Teague Hoover also missed multiple games with injuries but is closing in on 1,000 yards, rushing for 840.
The defense is stout and the starters have allowed just one score the past two weeks.
Linebackers Corey Rumberger and Ethan Miller form a dynamic tandem and have combined for 28 tackles for loss.
They each have three sacks and Caleb Hicks has five interceptions.
District 4 Class AAA QUARTERFINALS No. 6 Warrior Run at No. 3 Mifflinburg This is a rematch of a Week 9 matchup which Mifflinburg, won 35-7.
Warrior Run (3-7) played Mifflinburg tough in that game and had a chance to make it a one-score game in the third quarter before the Wildcats started pulling away.
The Defenders snapped a 19-game losing streak earlier this season and have made dramatic improvement, winning three of four games at one point.
Warrior Run has leaned on its explosive passing game this season and sophomore wide receiver Sam Hall went over 1,000 yards last week when he topped 100 yards for the fifth time.
He had seven catches for 142 yards and a score in the first Mifflinburg game.
Carter Marr also has had a big season, going over 600 yards while quarterback Ryan Newton is second in District 4 with 1,746 yards.
Newton through for more than 1,000 yards during the four game stretch when Warrior Run went 3-1.
This team is loaded with talented young players and that has shown on defense with freshman Tyler Ulrich being among the team’s tackle leaders all year.
Sophomore Isaiah Betz leads the team in sacks and tackles for loss and sophomore Colby Lebarron has two interceptions.
Mifflinburg (8-2) delivered under pressure against Lewisburg last week, mounting a game-winning, 99-yard touchdown drive to edge its rival, 18-13.
The Wildcats have not allowed more than 13 points at home this season and Andrew Diehl is one of the district’s most versatile players.
The senior running back ran for 361 yards and five touchdowns against Warrior Run two weeks ago and also leads the team in receiving while scoring 26 touchdowns five different ways.
Quarterback Troy Dressler is the program’s all-time leading passer and Emmanuel Ulrich and Lucas Whittaker swarm up front.
Tight end Kyler Troup is a 6-foot-7 threat who also has a team-high six sacks.
District 4 Class AAA QUARTERFINALS No. 8 N.P.-Mansfield at No. 1 Mount Carmel North Penn-Mansfield (3-7) earned its way into the playoffs with two straight second-half comeback road wins against Wyalusing and Wellsboro.
The Panthers surrendered just seven second-half points in those victories and all three of their wins are on the road this year.
Sophomore George Valentine had a big game against Wellsboro and Sammy Lawrence intercepted two passes, while catching the go-ahead touchdown.
Lawrence has scored six touchdowns the past three weeks.
Quarterback Karson Dominick is third among area quarterbacks with 1,319 yards and he accounted for three scores against Wellsboro.
Kohen Lehman has led the team in rushing three straight years and ran for 134 yards and a touchdown against Wellsboro.
Lawerence, Alex Davis and Cooper Shaw all have caught 20 or more passes.
Mount Carmel (10-0) is the state’s No. 2-ranked team and captured the HAC-III championship.
The Tornadoes feature one of the state’s premier offensive lines and have thrown the ball as effectively as they have run it.
Cole Spears has returned from injury and is one of the district’s highest-rated passers while Xavier Diaz and Luke Blessing each went over 100 yards rushing in a 41-0 win at Shamokin last week.
Garrett Varano is a versatile threat who has scored touchdowns four different ways and the defense has forced 22 turnovers.
Matt Scicchitano and Jacob Shultz each have 10 tackles for loss.
Regular Season Bucktail at CMVT Bucktail and CMVT each had an open date, so they scheduled this Saturday matchup, giving each a chance at adding more highlights to their resurgent seasons.
Each team was winless last season but both have been vastly improved this season.
Bucktail (2-6) started the season 2-2 and has been in all but one game, featuring one of the area’s top-ranked offenses throughout the year.
The Bucks feature a strong running game with Tanner Pettingill, Braylon Fantaski and quarterback Brody Pentz all going over 500 yards rushing.
Pettingill ran for 203 yards and four touchdowns against Otto-Eldred and Fantaski totaled 295 yards and six touchdowns in a win at Sheffield.
Pentz also has thrown eight touchdowns and most of the team’s 18 players return next season.
CMVT (4-5) has put up some big offensive numbers as well and is coming off a 46-13 win at Montgomery.
Senior running back Toby Zajac has been a force, running for 489 yards and seven touchdowns the last two weeks.
Quarterback Caden Long needs just 27 yards to reach 1,000 and threw for 193 yards and four touchdowns last week.
Shane Tomlinson and Chase Koncsler are big-play threats and Braxtyn Brown returned the opening kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown at Montgomery.
