That’s why they knew exactly what had to happen this past Friday night in the regular season finale.

The Wildcats took care of business on their end, North Polk upset Nevada, and those two things , combined with a strong standing in the RPI , allowed Humboldt (8-1 overall) to claim the district title and a home playoff game this week against Hampton-Dumont/CAL (6-3).

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. as Class 3A joins 5A and 4A with opening round games.

Eight-player, A, 1A and 2A embark on the second week of postseason action. “We knew coming into (the Algona game) we had underperformed against a respectable Nevada team,” junior running back Lance Coon said. “But that’s not good enough for us.

To be the best, you have to beat the best by taking no plays off. “We let our anger at our own faults (vs.

Nevada) fester and brought together a pretty huge first half.” Coon was the main source of that on offense, rushing for 206 yards on 22 carries with four touchdowns.

He enters this week and another contest with a North Central Conference sitting at 1,161 yards and 16 TDs on the season, averaging almost seven yards per carry. “Offensively and defensively, we stayed solid as we have this whole season,” Coon said. “The defense did a great job of winning countless possessions for us to get back on the field.” The Wildcats started the season out with four consecutive shutouts in wins over Webster City, Garner-Hayfield/Ventura, Estherville-LC and Boone.

They didn’t allow more than 16 points in a game this year, and finished by surrendering just 58 in all, which averages out to only six per game.

Tayeton Lohaus, who has committed to the University of South Dakota, leads the team with 6.5 sacks and 12.5 tackles for loss.

Kaleb McCullough has 4.5 sacks, Owen Hubbell four and Trever Beach five interceptions.

As a team, Humboldt has recorded 21 sacks, 65 tackles for loss and forced 16 turnovers.

Hampton-Dumont/CAL secured its spot in the postseason with a 21-13 win over South Tama.

The Bulldogs are coached by former standout Cole Miller, who played college football at Buena Vista University.

Under Miller, the Bulldogs are a more pass-first offense, as junior Gavin Meader has thrown for 1,208 yards and 10 touchdowns with just three interceptions.

He also has 371 yards rushing six scores, as Tucker Heeren has hauled in 38 passes for 533 yards and four TDs.

On defense, Hampton-Dumont/CAL has forced 19 turnovers and scored two touchdowns.

The winner between Humboldt and Hampton-Dumont/CAL will meet either Benton (6-3) or Independence (9-1) in the quarterfinals.

Last year, the Wildcats topped Independence in the same round to reach the UNI-Dome. 4A: Webster City (6-3) at Iowa City Liberty (8-1) Meeting for the first time, Webster City will head to Iowa City take on on Liberty.

The Lynx secured a postseason bid as the district runners-up, rolling past Denison-Schleswig last week.

Jaxon Cherry is one of the top running backs in the state, and leads a Lynx ground unit that leads 4A in rushing yards and touchdowns.

The junior has 1,664 yards and 29 scores, averaging almost nine yards per carry.

Seniors CJ Hisler and Ty McKinney, along with sophomore Cael Nixon, provide more punch on offense.

The Webster City defense will be put to the test against quarterback Graham Beckman.

The junior has thrown for over 2,100 yards with 27 touchdowns and just four interceptions.

Iowa City Liberty’s coaching staff includes former University of Iowa standouts Scott Chandler, Landan Paulsen and Keenan Davis.

The winner advances to face either Newton (7-2) or Carlisle (8-1). 2A: West Lyon (7-2) at Greene County (8-1) It has been another banner season for Greene County and head coach Caden Duncan, as the former Prairie Valley standout has the Rams on the cusp of the UNI-Dome.

To get there, though, they will need to take out long-time contender West Lyon.

Greene County earned its sixth consecutive win by dominating Union last Friday, 35-13.

The Rams have scored over 30 points in five of the last six, with the lone game not reaching that being because it was a forfeit.

Gabe Ebersole has over 1,300 yards of total offense and 19 touchdowns, while Patrick Daugherty leads the team with 939 yards rushing and 10 scores.

West Lyon has won at least seven games each season since 2007, reaching double figures 10 times including perfect campaigns in 2013 and 2007.

Senior Ryer Crichton has over 1,000 yards of total offense and eight touchdowns, with sophomore Tate Hawf adding 701 yards rushing and nine scores.

The Wildcats topped Estherville-LC last week, 37-26, and have held four opponents to seven points or less.

Either Clarinda (6-3) or Central Lyon/George-Little Rock (9-0) awaits the winner between West Lyon and Greene County.

Eight-player: West Bend-Mallard (7-2) at Remsen St.

Mary’s (9-0) West Bend-Mallard will try to be the one that puts an end to Remsen St.

Mary’s perfect season.

The Wolverines trounced Clarksville in the opening round, 48-0, for their fourth consecutive win.

On the year, WB-M has been strong on both sides of the football, posting 83 points in one game and holding five opponents under 14 points.

Senior Max Fehr has thrown for 564 yards, rushed for 1,094 and accounted for 33 touchdowns.

Landon Montag has 819 yards and 11 scores on the ground, while Sam Fehr, Tyler Banwart and Kaden Van Wyhe each have over 100 yards receiving.

On defense, Ben Massner has eight sacks and the Wolverines have forced 23 turnovers and scored four defensive TDs.

Remsen St.

Mary’s has yet to play a game closer than 35 points, recording five shutouts, including a 76-0 victory vs.

Audubon last week.

The Hawks had three consecutive shutouts during September and have scored over 60 points in six straight.

Cael Ortmann is 69 of 83 passing for 1,309 yards and 23 touchdowns with just one interception.

He also has 616 yards rushing and 14 scores, while Brenden Fisch has 601 yards rushing and 14 TDs.

The Wolverines would face either district rival GTRA (8-1) or another unbeaten in West Harrison (9-0) with a victory.

Eight-player: Newell-Fonda (8-1) at Don Bosco (8-0) Since a loss to Remsen St.

Mary’s, Newell-Fonda has been firing on all cylinders.

The Mustangs used a big second half last week to oust Harris-Lake Park, 55-26.

Now, they turn their attention to Don Bosco.

The Dons have been in a couple of close games, topping Easton Valley by four and Gladbrook-Reinbeck by three.

Other than that, they haven’t had much trouble with the opposition.

Ty Purdy has over 1,500 yards of total offense and 26 TDs, while Myles McMahon has racked up 1,271 yards rushing and 22 touchdowns.

Looking to keep pace with Don Bosco will be Mason Dicks, as the Newell-Fonda senior has 1,288 yards passing and 20 TDs with another 518 and 10 rushing.

Ryan Greenfield is a dual-threat out of the backfield with 603 yards receiving, 489 yards rushing and 17 TDs.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck (8-1) and Turkey Valley (7-1) meet in the other pod matchup.
