Oct 20, 2022 Juniata Valley girls win ICC crown By DENNY Sroka Sports correspondent sports@lewistownsentinel.com ALEXANDRIA , The Inter County Conference Championship Meet was held on Wednesday afternoon at Juniata Valley High School.
The Hornet girls came out on top winning the team title.
There were five teams that scored in the meet competing for the gold.
The Mount Union Boys placed third in a field of seven schools and the Southern Huntingdon Rockets ran sixth. “The girl’s stepped up today in what we knew was going to be a very close meet,” commented Hornets coach Delores Gahagan. “We are very proud of the effort, and we had personal best times today.
The meet was extremely competitive, and the team came out and ran hard.” Boys Joseph McKelvey from Winber set the pace of the field today with a time of 16:22 followed by teammate Garrett Page at 16:57.
The Mount Union boys are coming off an unbeaten season, winning the ICC title but placed third on Wednesday afternoon with a couple runners coming back from injury.
The first Trojan to cross the line was Ryan Plank finishing in ninth place at 18:41.
Mason Beatty was 17th at 19:23 and Ethan Fisher was in the No. 20 spot at 19:40.
In 24th was Evan Yakymac at 19:57 and in 25th was Jacik Hess at 19:57 rounding out the Trojans scoring, Southern Huntingdon placed sixth with Izaac Erwin running in 14th place at 19:19 followed by Christian Hoops at 20:50 in 33rd place.
In 38th place was Elijah Harper at 21:36 and Caleb Greenland finished 41st at 21:47.
In forty eighth was Josh Griest at 22:39.
The Hornets had one runner with Jack Confer placing 32nd at 20:48. “It was a tough race for the team being very competitive and the weather conditions were tough,” said Trojans coach Bob Wydock. “Proud of the effort by the team turning in good times today.” Girls Lexi Levrich of Bellwood-Antis set a fast time for the girls at 19:44 followed by Samantha Hershberger from West Branch at 20:12.
In third place was Cecelia Bean of Windber at 21:06.
In fourth was Madison Sneath of Juniata Valley.
In seventh place from Juniata Valley was Ella McCrum at 22:33 followed by Katie Dyerson at 22:59 in tenth place.
Eve McCrum placed 14th at 23:17 and Maddie Hopsicker rounded out the Hornets scoring in 17th at 23:47.
Southern Huntingdon’s Emma McMath placed 12th at 23:07 followed by Katelyn Harper in 26th at 24:23.
Lucy Wingert placed 36th at 26:40 and Bella Price crossed the line at 35:35.
The Trojans did not have any girls running due to injuries. “We had both the girls, and the boys turn in personal best times today,” Rockets coach Steve Keim said. “We had girls beat girls that outran them in regular season meets.
We will start to think about next season, and this has created momentum for the track this coming spring.” In the junior high meet, Dorian Loner placed first and Oscar James placed fifth.
They are both from Mount Union.
The next event is the District 6 meet being held at Indian Valley Elementary School in Lewistown on October 29.
