CLAY COUNTY , One worker is dead and at least three others were injured around 1:44 p.m.
Wednesday, Oct. 26, when a bridge under construction near Kearney at 148th Street and Shady Grove Road, collapsed.
Contractor crews had been pouring concrete when the bridge gave way, said Sarah Boyd, public relations manager for the Sheriff’s Office.
The bridge spans Carroll Creek east of Kearney and has been closed since 2016 due to disrepair.
A complete replacement of the bridge began in 2021.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office as well as Kearney Fire and Rescue Protection District, Liberty Fire and Excelsior Springs Fire responded after an initial report of injuries came in.
Boyd said emergency responders had to reinforce the bridge structure before they could extricate the worker who died and was trapped.
It took over an hour to shore up the area.
The bridge, according to the highway department, was expected to open in 2023.
