Delhi News Highlights, October 18: The President has accepted the resignation of AAP’s Rajendra Pal Gautam, who resigned earlier this month after his involvement in a ‘conversion’ event was highlighted by BJP leaders.
BJP alleged that anti-Hindu statements were made at the event, where thousands of people converted to Buddhism.
The MHA’s gazette notification said, “President is pleased to accept, on the advice of the Chief Minister of the National Capital Territory of Delhi, the resignation of Shri Rajendra Pal Gautam, a Minister in the National Capital Territory of Delhi, with immediate effect.” Blaming BJP for the controversy, Gautam said in his resignation letter that he had not insulted Hindu gods and goddesses and only repeated the vow taken by BR Ambedkar when he converted to Buddhism but he did not want AAP to suffer because of him before the Gujarat Assembly polls.
The Delhi High Court Tuesday dismissed UAPA accused Umar Khalid ’s bail plea, saying that it found “no merit” in the appeal.
The bench had reserved its decision on September 9.
Khalid had moved the Delhi HC after he was denied bail by trial court on March 24. He has been booked under several provisions of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), the Arms Act and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act in Delhi Police’s ‘larger conspiracy case’ of the 2020 Northeast Delhi riots.

The HC has held that there appears to be a “premeditated conspiracy” for causing disruptive chakka jam and pre-planned protest at different planned sites in Delhi, which was engineered to escalate to confrontational chakka jam and incitement of violence and culminate in riots in natural course on specific dates. “The protest planned was not a typical protest, normal in politicial culture or democracy but one far more destructive and injurious geared towards extremely grave consequences.” The judgment authored by Justice Bhatnagar upheld the trial court’s decision which held that the accusations against Khalid is “prima facie true”.
Khalid had moved the HC against the order of Additional Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat, Karkardooma District Court who had rejected Khalid’s regular bail application.
In a 52-page judgment, the HC has upheld the findings of the trial court and observed, “The Ld Sessions Judge didnt miss the wood for the trees and has extensively dealt with the contention of the rival parties to arrive at a just decision, which cannot be faulted, especially when at the stage of bail, the Ld Judge was mandated to only be satisfied to the extent of accusation being prima facie true and not conduct a mini trial..” The Delhi High Court Tuesday dismissed activist Umar Khalid in the case of the alleged larger conspiracy behind the Northeast Delhi riots in 2020.

The Delhi Police have booked Khalid under several provisions of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), The Arms Act, and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act.
He was arrested on September 13, 2020, and has been in custody since.

Residents of the Lotus Boulevard society are protesting against Noida authority over death of 1-year-old after being bitten by a stray dog.
A one-year-old boy bitten by a stray dog at a Noida high-rise society Monday afternoon succumbed to injuries at a hospital in the early hours of Tuesday, said the police.
The boy’s labourer parents were working on a road inside the Lotus Boulevard society in Sector 100 when the dog attacked him around 4.30 pm, said the police.
The child was rushed to Yatharth Super Speciality Hospital in Sector 110, where he was declared dead around 3.30 am.

The Supreme Court had in July this year upheld the October 11, 2018 order of the Punjab and Haryana High Court that the juvenile be examined afresh to ascertain whether he should be tried as an adult or not for the alleged crime that occurred at a private school in Gurugram.
The JJB had earlier directed that the juvenile should be tried as an adult.
While the sessions court upheld the order in May 2018, the high court had set it aside after which the victim’s father had approached the apex court.

The Supreme Court heard Stephen’s plea on Monday and said that the matter “deserves consideration”, listing it for Wednesday.
