Manitowoc County Sheriff Dan Hartwig said Wednesday, Aug. 3 that the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a report of animal neglect in the town of Schleswig.
In the statement, Hartwig said the Sheriff’s Office received information from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) in late July regarding a possible hoarding and neglect of rabbits, poultry and other animals at a farm within the town of Schleswig.
Hartwig continues and says investigators gained probable cause and obtained a search warrant for the property.
The search warrant was executed Tuesday morning, Aug. 2, and numerous rabbits and poultry were removed from the property.
It is said in the release that the owners are cooperating with law enforcement.
Hartwig states that it is an ongoing investigation and information will be provided as the investigation continues.
Hartwig also states in the release that the Lakeshore Humane Society is assisting with temporary housing, care and possible relocation of the animals removed from the property.
Lakeshore Humane Society is asking for volunteers and donations for the care of the animals.
Additional information can be found at https://www.lakeshorehumane.org/ways-to-give/make-a-donation .
Hartwig thanks PETA, Lakeshore Humane Society, the Animal Health Division of the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection, DATCAP, and numerous volunteers that assisted with the incident.
