Original story, 9 a.m.: High pressure will continue to provide our region with dry - very warm - and increasingly breezy conditions with widespread near record to record high temperatures today, according to the National Weather Service.
This morning, temperature readings are in the low to mid 60s across the lake plains and in the 50s at higher elevations, with record highs expected as temperatures are forecast to reach into the mid-70s today, the Weather Service said in a forecast discussion this morning.
Normal highs for the region are around 53 degrees, with record highs of 75 for Rochester and 76 for Buffalo, according to historical data from the Weather Service.
A passing cold front will then bring gusty winds and a round of showers as it crosses the area tonight and early Sunday.
The conditions have also prompted the Weather Service to issue wind advisories for parts of the region.
Wind advisories will go into effect at 6 tonight across the region.
The advisories will be in effect until midnight for Genesee, Livingston, and Wyoming counties.
The advisories also include Chautauqua, Erie, Monroe, and Ontario counties.
South winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph are expected in the advisory that includes Genesee and Wyoming County.
South winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph and expected for the advisory area that includes Livingston County, the National Weather Service said.
A few gusts to 45 mph are also possible early today near the Lake Erie shoreline from Fredonia to Dunkirk, the Weather Service said.
Gusty conditions are also expected in Orleans, Niagara, Allegany Cattaraugus, northern Cayuga, Oswego and Wayne counties - though not enough to reach advisory criteria.
The Weather Service did note that advisories could be issued later for those counties.
Southerly winds will increase out ahead of an approaching cold front this afternoon through this evening.
Winds could gust up to 45 mph prior to the frontal passage, the Weather Service said.
Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects.
Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result.
Use extra caution when driving, especially if operating a high profile vehicle.
Above normal temperatures will persist through most if not all of next week, the Weather Service said in a forecast discussion.
On Friday, the Weather Service reported a record high temperature of 74 degrees was recorded at Buffalo.
The day’s previous high temperature of 73 degrees had been set in 1938.
