The Supreme Court on Wednesday refused to entertain a petition seeking direction to all the courts to deny bail to politicians facing serious criminal allegations.

The plea also sought directions to cancel the bail granted to those 'criminal' politicians who are facing charges for heinous offences where the trial could not take place or remained pending for the last five years or more.

The petitioner argued that unless the entire investigating machinery is freed from political control, granting of bail was detrimental to the interest of overall governance in the country.

A bench led by CJI UU Lalit on Wednesday allowed the petitioner to withdraw the plea and dismissed the case as withdrawn.
