Could combat sports be primed for a disruption like the one seen with the Saudi-funded LIV Golf property?

The answer to that is not entirely clear, but category leader UFC has faced criticism in recent years from some for its fighter pay, which theoretically could leave it vulnerable to challengers if they were deep-pocketed enough.

One MMA property that is trying to take marketshare off UFC is the Professional Fighters League.

PFL CEO Peter Murray this summer told Sports Business Journal that LIV Golf “is innovative and disruptive” and is “giving pro golfers more opportunity to compete and earn more money, so I think it’s an interesting model and we’re certainly watching it closely at the PFL.” He added: “We are a disrupter and a challenger brand similar to LIV,” and added that like LIV, the PFL has global ambitions as it is starting regional leagues all over the world to create a Champions League-like tournament for MMA.

Saudi Arabia has already become somewhat of a hot spot for major fights with athletes and promoters looking to strike a big purse and promote themselves in the Middle East.

The country recently hosted a major boxing match between Anthony Joshua and Oleksandr Usyk in Jeddah and is a possible venue to host a prospective bout between Usyk and Tyson Fury next year.

For Joshua-Usyk, which Usyk won by split decision, the two fighters were reported to have received million each, with a significant portion of that funding coming from the Saudis.
