Engagement rate is the number that tells you whether your audience cares. Followers are vanity. Engagement is behavior. Here is how to measure it and move it.
The formula
Divide the total interactions on a post by your follower count, then multiply by 100. Interactions are likes, comments, shares, and saves.
Example: 400 reactions on a 10,000 follower page is a 4 percent rate. That number is healthy. Under 1 percent means the audience is not reading what you post.
What healthy looks like
- 2 to 4 percent: solid, most pages should aim here.
- Above 5 percent: outstanding, hold whatever you are doing.
- Under 1 percent: the content, the audience, or both need a change.
Levers that raise the rate
- Ask a question in the caption. Comments are the highest weight interaction.
- Post content people save. Saves mean value, and the algorithm loves them.
- Keep reels under 20 seconds so finish rate rises on the same audience.
The baseline problem
New pages have tiny base counts, so engagement rate looks brutal even when the content works. A page with 100 followers and 10 reactions is at 10 percent, but the reach is still tiny. This is where a baseline helps. A credible follower count gives the rate a denominator that does not distort every post. Indian Instagram likes on each post lift the numerator the same way.
Track it weekly
Pick one metric, not five. Engagement rate beats raw likes because it measures the audience, not the platform. Check it every Monday, watch the trend, and change one lever a week.
