Instagram DMs get a deservedly bad name from spam sends: everyone gets the copy-pasted pitch from accounts that never engaged before. The polite version works better and costs nothing, and it is the only version that builds repeat buyers.
Open with a real reason
Name the actual post or comment that triggered the message. "Saw your comment on use-case reels" beats "Hi, are you interested in amazing offers". The specific is the credibility. A message with no specific stalls immediately.
Ask before you pitch
First message: relevance and a question. "We answer product-body questions here, want the quick version?" Permission turns the conversation from interrupt to invited. The click-through from an invited pitch is massively higher.
The script that closes
- One-line relevance: name the thing they touched.
- One-line offer: what it is and what it costs plainly.
- One question: the single next step, not a menu.
What kills DM sales
Copied blasts, pitching with no context, follow-up pings on silence, and running the sale entirely in DMs with no paper trail. Every one of these signals what the buyer already suspects.
Make the profile do the pre-sell
DMs convert when the profile already proves the offer. A DM that lands on a feed with a working likes baseline faces a shorter pitch, because the proof arrived before the message did.
The polite rule
Sell to people who asked you something, or add value before you ever ask. DM selling works exactly as well as it deserves when it respects the inbox.
